Ronkswood Hub play area, Worcester — a complete transformation for the local community

When Worcester City Council set out to transform three community play areas across Worcester as part of a £331,000 investment funded through planning related developer contributions, Greenfields was appointed to deliver the Ronkswood Hub play area and today that playground is open and already being enjoyed by the local community.

Worcester City Council invested £155,000 in revamping the playground, which stands next to Ronkswood Hub in Canterbury Road. The result is a space that is safer, more inclusive and more imaginative than ever before and one that the Ronkswood community can be genuinely proud of.

We are incredibly proud of what the Greenfields team has achieved on this project, and particularly of Sue and Will whose dedication and hard work brought it to life. Seeing children playing in the finished space on opening day made every moment worthwhile.

A project shaped by the community

What makes this project particularly meaningful is that every decision was shaped by the people who use the space. The work followed consultation with residents, who were invited to share their ideas and priorities for the parks earlier this year. The result is a playground that genuinely reflects what the Ronkswood community wanted and needed.

Councillor Adrian Gregson, Chair of Worcester City Council's Place & Economic Development Committee, said the council was delighted to be investing in these much loved community play areas.

What we delivered

Working closely with Worcester City Council, the Greenfields team delivered a complete overhaul of both the junior and toddler play areas, along with upgrades to the wider site.

Junior play area, ages 3 to 14

The junior area was designed with the Make Space for Girls initiative at its heart, ensuring the space is genuinely welcoming and engaging for children of all backgrounds and abilities. New equipment includes a social swing area, hexagonal climbing blocks, stepping posts, somersault bars and an inclusive net hammock. Existing equipment including the zip wire was retained and refurbished, giving the space the best of both old and new.

Toddler play area, ages 1 and above

New features for toddlers include a storytelling area, a stage for children to practise imaginative performances and enjoy creative play, additional seating, a roundabout, seesaw and chalkboard. New safety surfacing was laid throughout, and bespoke carved bear statues were installed to give the space real character and a sense of fun. Existing play units were also refreshed with fresh paint, bringing everything back to as new condition.

MUGA upgrades

The existing multi use games area received new basketball and football court markings, basketball backboards and nets, creating a properly equipped space for teenagers and adults in the community.

Fencing

New boundary fencing was installed throughout, clearly defining the play areas and keeping children safe whilst maintaining an open and welcoming feel.

Tree planting

As part of our commitment to the communities and environments we work in, tree planting was carried out in the local area as part of the wider project.
