September tasks. The flower garden.

Tasks for December

In December, plants are dormant and weather conditions can make working outdoors very unpleasant.  There are still many jobs to be completed, however.  As well as taking every opportunity to finish digging and manuring the soil before the end of the year, plants will have to be given protection against the cold.

The Flower Garden

Hellebores Niger and Iris unguicularis usually bloom this month and need to be protected from slugs.

Peg fine plastic mesh over crocus corms to prevent mice and voles digging them up.

If a spell of good weather occurs, you can still plant out hardy perennials for the border.

Set cloches over hellebores to prevent flowers being splashed.

Take root cuttings of herbaceous plants such as romneya and Oriental poppy and detach side roots of pencil thickness: keep in cool moist sand.

October The Fruit Garden. Tasks for this month.

Harvest apples as they ripen and pick late-keeping pears when well-coloured and easily parted from the tree.

Gather autumn raspberries and take cuttings of blackcurrants (this years shoots), red and white currants and gooseberries.

Prune well trained Morello cherries and pick walnuts as they begin to fall.

Prepare ground for new fruit trees and bushes.

If root pruning is necessary, now is the time to do it.

Roses, Shrubs and Trees

Plant new roses at the end of this month and early November.  Now is the time to dig well rotted organic manure into new rose beds.

You can also move roses that need transplanting now, shortening broken roots with pruners before planting.

Complete planting evergreen shrubs as soon as possible, especially in the north of the country, so that their roots can keep the leaves nurtured during the winter.

Make the most of fine weather to plant deciduous shrubs.

Cam Everlands School: Project

5.  New play area.   Trim trail with rubber safety surfaces.

6.  Role play ship and house.

7.  Play mound for children to sit on and run up and down.

Objectives

To create a multi purpose educational/play zone which is durable, safe but also interesting and can be used by all ages of children.

October Vegetables and Herbs. Tasks for this month.

Finish lifting potatoes, beetroot and carrots and cut down tall stems of Jerusalem artichokes as they yellow.

Cut to ground level top growth of asparagus and stems of globe artichokes.

Give a final earthing up to winter celery to protect it from frost.

Hoe between winter vedgetables and watch out for slug damage.

When storing, remove loose scales to prevent mould forming.
